THE LOWDOWN

COCO GAUFF

World number 23 Coco Gauff put in a huge display on Sunday to hand Elise Mertens a first-set bagel in a straight-sets victory. The 18-year-old has emulated her best Grand Slam showing by reaching successive quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and it took the eventual champion, Barbora Krejcikova, to oust her last season. Gauff won the second of her two WTA titles on clay at last season’s Emilia-Romagna Open and it has taken the likes of Simona Halep and Maria Sakkari to beat her on this surface this month.

SLOANE STEPHENS

Former world number three Sloane Stephens won 12 games in a row for the second time this campaign with a stunning victory over in-form Jil Teichmann on Sunday. The 29-year-old finished runner-up to Simona Halep here in 2018 a year after becoming a Grand Slam champion at the US Open and she is through to the quarter-finals in Paris for a third time on what is her favoured surface. Stephens won the seventh WTA title of her career at the Guadalajara Open back in February, with her only title on clay coming at the 2016 Charleston Open.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a three-set classic between former world number three Sloane Stephens and 18-year-old Coco Gauff, who should in little doubt one day be the world number one. The pair know each other well off the court as Floridian natives, with Stephens something of a friend and mentor to Gauff in her formative years which is strange phraseology to use for an 18-year-old. However, Gauff is no ordinary teenager. The current world number 23 reached this stage last season before defeat to the eventual champion and she has spoken about her regret for that result as something to atone for this year or soon. Stephens has played her brief but brilliant brand of lights-out tennis in two matches already this campaign and if she maintains that she could lift the trophy on Saturday. However, Gauff is the more dependable performer of the two at this moment in time and backing the younger American to win at least a set as the just-about likelier victory seems reasonable.
