THE LOWDOWN

COCO GAUFF

World number 16 Coco Gauff overcame in-form Yulia Putintseva in three sets on Saturday to reach the round of 16 at the Madrid Open. The 18-year-old beat Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka in the Women’s Doubles alongside Jessica Pegula on Friday and all that clay-court practice will only serve to improve her singles campaign on a surface that suits her game. Gauff reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season and soon after won a second WTA title at the Emilia-Romagna Open on clay.

SIMONA HALEP

Former world number one Simona Halep was exceptional on Saturday to beat the top seed Paula Badosa to the tune of just four conceded games. The Romanian is at home on the clay, on which she won her first of two Grand Slam titles at Roland-Garros in 2018, and she is a two-time champion here in Madrid from 2016 and 2017. Halep won the 23rd WTA title of her career at the start of this season at Melbourne 1.

THE PREDICTION

Simona Halep beating Paula Badosa was no fluke nor a surprise and the former world number one should be considered one of the title favourites now with so many seeds falling by the wayside. Halep recently beat Gauff in straight-sets at Indian Wells in March to extend her head-to-head record over the teenager to 2-0 and on clay she is likely to maintain that 100% record. Gauff is due a huge result one day soon but it would be a surprise to see Halep fall after such a huge scalp of her own. Take Halep to win outright.
