THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Paula Badosa came back from a set down for the second-successive match to oust up-and-coming youngster Diana Shnaider. The 26-year-old has won three matches on the spin for the first time since her run to the quarter-finals here in Rome last season, eventually falling in three sets to Jelena Ostapenko, but emulating that feat looks a terribly tough task against world number three Coco Gauff.

20-year-old Gauff beat in-form Jaqueline Cristian in three sets on Saturday but her serving issues worsened, handing the Romanian 15 free points on serve to bring her tournament tally of doubles faults up to 24. Gauff should be able to rediscover the bullish best form that saw her lift the US Open last summer but her clearly potent weapons are concerningly susceptible to misfires. Current world number 126 Badosa leads their head-to-head 3-1 after blasting through their encounter on clay last spring in Madrid and backing the Spaniard to earn at least a set looks the shrewd way to avoid a result.

TIP: PAULA BADOSA TO WIN A SET
