COCO GAUFF – US Open champion, runner-up here in 2022
World number three Coco Gauff looks to be enjoying something of a peak on the late clay, needing eventual champion Iga Swiatek to oust her in the semi-finals in Rome before surging through to the quarter-finals here. The 20-year-old finished runner-up to Swiatek here two years ago but she has, vastly improved from that experience since to blossom into the Grand Slam champion she is today.
Gauff is yet to drop a set this fortnight after ousting in-form Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1 6-2 on Sunday but this will be her toughest test by some distance.
ONS JABEUR – Three-time Grand Slam finalist
World number nine Ons Jabeur grabbed an impressive, steady win over up-and-coming Clara Tauson on Sunday, backing-up a more rip-roaring victory over Leylah Fernandez. The 29-year-old has matches her best showing here at Roland-Garros with a second-successive quarter-final but, most importantly, she has clearly rediscovered her joy on court – a weapon she uses both to outwit most opponents and bring an adoring crowd around to her cause.
Jabeur has never lost a semi-final at this level but she has lost three each of quarter-finals and finals, including each of the last two at Wimbledon.
COCO GAUFF VS ONS JABEUR PREDICTION
This will be a tough match for neutrals to side with but most likely a thrilling, good-natured battle between two of the more entertaining big-occasion players on the WTA tour. It would be easy to assume that Coco Gauff’s best surface is hardcourt after her incredible summer on the surface last season but clay is arguably as conducive to her gritty athleticism, if not more so, and especially when she struggling with her serve.
Ons Jabeur’s court-craft is as majestic as it is fun but she will have to be at her best, most deft, most pin-point to frustrate Gauff into submission at this stage of the tournament. Gauff is the better of the two at winning ugly, at making results out of poor performances, and that should ultimately prove the difference.
The American leads their head-to-head 4-2 but they are 2-2 since 2021, with Gauff leading 2-1 on clay including in the round of 16 here three years ago. Back Gauff to reach the semi-finals.
COCO GAUFF VS ONS JABEUR TIP: COCO GAUFF TO WIN
