THE LOWDOWN
19-year-old Coco Gauff fulfilled her destiny last month with an incredible, joyous run through to the US Open title. The American comes into Cancun at a career-high WTA world ranking of third and in almost unrecognisable form to last season’s tough debut, where she lost all six matches in singles and doubles. Gauff lost to Sofia Kenin in the first round of Wimbledon to look all at sea on July but an immediate transformation under new coach Brad Gilbert saw her claim a first WTA 500 title in Washington and then a first Masters in Cincinnati en-route to the US Open. A run to the semi-finals of the Beijing Masters last time out was ended by eventual champion Iga Swiatek but only the Pole and world number five Jessica Pegula have beaten Gauff since the start of August.
World number seven Ons Jabeur delighted crowds at Wimbledon once again this summer before another slightly shocking defeat in the final, this time to the unflappable Marketa Vondrousova. 29-year-old Jabeur achieved one of her career goals by becoming the first Arab player to qualify for the WTA Finals this time last season but finishing runner-up at three Grand Slam finals since the start of 2022 looks to have take a toll on the self-appointed ‘Minister for Happiness’ in recent months. Jabeur has five WTA titles to her name after adding the Charleston Open and Ningbo Open this season but recent struggles with fitness and form make predicting what she can do in Cancun very tough indeed.
THE PREDICTION
Coco Gauff leads Ons Jabeur 3-2 in their head-to-head but it is notable that the pair have not met since June 2022, since when both players have peaked and troughed their way through some of their very best tennis. 19-year-old Gauff will be backed strongly as the in-form new superstar of the tour but Jabeur is probably the most popular player on tour, certainly world number one in charisma and entertainment, to suggest the crowd will shift with the momentum of what could be a proper thriller. A recent injury at the Zhengzhou Open makes Jabeur tough to back here but Gauff seriously struggled on her WTA Finals debut last season and Gauff could be a little rusty after three weeks off. Back the American to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
BETTING TIP: Coco Gauff to win a set.
