World number 59 Claire Liu was supposed to face world number one Iga Swiatek on Thursday but she made full use of the defending champion’s withdrawal from the tournament to beat replacement Julia Grabher in straight sets. The 22-year-old will be well-backed as the home underdog on paper in this third round meeting with 25th seed Martina Trevisan but realistically the American is the slightest of favourites here in conditions that suit her, particularly with home advantage. World number 24 Trevisan did well to beat qualifier Nao Hibino in straight sets on Thursday but the Italian is one of the more out-and-out clay specialists around. Trevisan will be desperately anticipating the tour’s return to the clay next month but she should not be too harshly underestimated here. Back Liu, with the second wind momentum of avoiding Swiatek in her sails, to win outright.
