World number 197 Caty McNally stunned the Birmingham Classic fourth seed Elise Mertens on Tuesday, coming back from a set down to back-up a brilliant run to the quarter-finals of last week’s Libema Open. The 20-year-old faces a decent chance at emulating that run here as she takes on fellow qualifier Donna Vekic for a first time. 25-year-old Vekic beat Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets on Monday after coming through as the qualifying top seed and the world number 92 has an excellent game for grass as a Nottingham Open champion from 2017. This is a tough call between experience and current form but backing McNally to win at least a set looks the more sensible way to lean in leaving the winner up chance.
