THE PREDICTION
World number nine Casper Ruud will play his first match back since his shock exit to Zhizhen Zhang at the US Open earlier this month, his second consecutive second round exit at a Grand Slam. The 24-year-old did finish runner-up at Roland-Garros for a second season running in June to maintain his top 10 place but he has been much less effective away from his favoured surface than last season, bringing a relatively average 30-18 record into the Laver Cup. World number 13 Tommy Paul should enjoy the atmosphere here playing for Team World, who start the day 4-0 up after a whitewash on Day 1, and he has been provably excellent in Canada with consecutive wins over Carlos Alcaraz at the Canada Masters in each of the last two seasons. Ruud beat Paul in five sets en-route to the US Open final last season but Paul has since reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne and the round of 16 in New York as an improved player on last year. Each of their four previous meetings have seen sets go both ways, with Ruud leading 3-1, so taking this match to see three sets looks a valuable way to avoid picking a winner.
