THE LOWDOWN
World number four Casper Ruud put recent poor form behind him to stun red-hot Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets on Sunday. The 23-year-old set a career-high world ranking of second in September after finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open – his second runners-up trophy at a major in 2022 after also falling to his idol Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros this summer. Ruud reached the semi-finals of the ATP Finals last season with victories over Cam Norrie and Andrey Rublev before losing to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev.
World number nine Taylor Fritz just snuck into the ATP Finals draw after world number one Carlos Alcaraz was forced to withdraw through injury and the American grabbed his opportunity with both hands in a straight-sets victory over Rafael Nadal. 25-year-old Fritz reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this summer before defeat in five sets to the Spaniard, his best showing at a major so far, but he claimed a first Masters title at Nadal’s expense at Indian Wells.
THE PREDICTION
It is a surprise to find that Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz have never met on tour considering their similar ages but this is an excellent occasion to play out their first encounter. Ruud has now 49 wins this season to Fritz’ 43 but with three titles apiece it could be argued that the American has enjoyed the better season overall, with Ruud’s best three finals all ending in defeat in Miami, Paris and Wimbledon. Beating Rafael Nadal is sure to give Fritz some extra pep but Ruud is perennially underestimated, particularly in these conditions, and his victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime suggests he has come to Turin with a fresh mentality after an understandable post-US Open blip. Back the Norwegian, with ATP Finals experience under his belt, to win at least a set here as the just-about likelier victor.
