THE PREDICTION
World number five Casper Ruud totally dominated a top clay-courter in Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Saturday to reach the Gstaad Open final for a second year running. The defending champion is the top seed here ahead of world number 15 Matteo Berrettini, who is rightfully around seventh in the world after losing a huge amount of ranking points from Wimbledon’s controversial Russian/Belarussian ban. 26-year-old Berettini was forced to miss Wimbledon anyway after cruelly contracting covid-19 on the eve of the tournament, meaning he is still riding a winning streak now 12 matches long after back-to-back titles won on grass at the Stuttgart Open and Queen’s Club.
Berrettini beat a resurgent Dominic Thiem in straight sets on Saturday in a performance that suggests he has enough to overcome Ruud, who has an arguably similar game to the Austrian on clay. The pair share a 2-2 head-to-head record after Berrettini levelled things in the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters last season but Ruud leads 2-1 on clay with wins in Rome and Paris. This should be a proper thriller if both players bring their very best but if Berrettini is anywhere near his it is hard to imagine Ruud breaking the Italian’s hammer serve enough to win through. Back Berrettini to win a third-straight title here or take at least a set inside an accumulator.
