THE LOWDOWN
CASPER RUUD
World number eight Casper Ruud put in a more assured performance on Monday to beat the 12th seed Hubert Hurkacz in four sets. The 23-year-old suffered a wobble against Lorenzo Sonego in the third round but ultimately battled well to win in five and he deserves his first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final here as a top clay-courter well capable of one day winning in Paris. Ruud defended his Geneva Open title last time out for a seventh ATP title on clay, and an eighth overall, with a run to the Miami Open back in April final his most impressive campaign before now.
HOLGER RUNE
World number 40 Holger Rune blew the Roland-Garros draw wide open on Monday with a stunning upset over world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets. The teenager will break the top 30 for a first time next week no matter the outcome here on what has become an incredible debut at Roland-Garros, becoming the first Danish man to reach the quarter-finals in Paris. Rune won his maiden ATP title at the Munich Open at the start of May, stunning Alexander Zverev in straight sets for a career-best ranking win.
THE PREDICTION
This should be the match of the day in an all-Scandinavian quarter-final clash between Norway’s Casper Ruud and Denmark’s rising star Holger Rune. Both are at their best on the clay but the head-to-head record makes grim reading for the 19-year-old, who has lost each of their three meetings in straight sets on the surface including at the Monte-Carlo Open last month. Rune’s defeat of Stefanos Tsitsipas was vastly impressive, and it should in turn bolster his already enormous self-belief, but backing the more reliable Ruud to edge this outright seems like siding with the head over the heart here. You could take the more cautious route in backing Ruud to win at least two sets, or for both players to win at least a set.
