THE PREDICTION
The top two seeds in Bastad meet here for what could be a thrilling final. World number one Casper Ruud won one of his 10 ATP titles here two years ago and he has returned the final with little fuss, ousting third seed Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets on Saturday to maintain a spotless record. The 24-year-old finished runner-up at Roland-Garros last month to further prove his credentials on his favoured surface and he looks eager to capitalise on the remaining few weeks of clay after a brief, uncomfortable break on the grass. World number seven Andrey Rublev lost to Djokovic in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon but the Russian looked wholly more competitive against the Serb than he has in recent meetings. The 25-year-old won his most prestigious of 13 ATP titles at the Monte-Carlo Masters, on clay, back in April and breaking that duck looks to have reinvigorated his confidence after a fairly concerning 2022. Both players have reached the final in two of their last three tournaments, with Rublev finishing runner-up to Alexander Bublik in Halle last month.
Rublev leads Ruud 4-2 in their head-to-head record but the Norwegian has won each of their last two encounters at respective ATP Finals, including in the semi-finals last November. Notably, Rublev leads Ruud 3-0 on clay to suggest he has the tools to cope with Ruud’s hammer forehand on the surface and the Russian has impressed this week with a straight-sets victory over Alexander Zverev before a three-set marathon win over defending champion Francisco Cerundolo. This is a really tight call between Rublev’s level and Ruud’s consistency in these conditions. The top seed has won nine of his 11 ATP 250 finals on clay, including each of his last eight since defeat in the Chile Open final in 2020. Back Ruud to just edge through or consider three sets a suitable alternative to siding with anyone.
