THE LOWDOWN
CASPER RUUD
World number eight Casper Ruud is quietly going about an excellent campaign at the Miami Open after extending his strong record over Cam Norrie with another straight-sets victory on Tuesday. The 23-year-old won the seventh ATP title of his career at the Buenos Aires Open last month on his favoured clay and he looks set for a successful swing over the next few months in this form. Ruud is not just a clay specialist, though, with a run to the semi-finals of the ATP Finals on his debut last November.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
24-year-old Alexander Zverev beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets on Tuesday to continue a steady trajectory towards a fairly likely final at the Miami Open. The German number one will regain the world number three spot that he looks set to be scrapping over with Rafael Nadal over the next few months on clay. Zverev claimed two Masters titles last season, on clay at the Madrid Open and on hard at the Cincinnati Open, alongside a second ATP Finals trophy and a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
THE PREDICTION
Alexander Zverev looks to have put his shocking episode at the Mexican Open behind him now with a series of fairly unremarkable, solid wins at the Miami Open. As much as Casper Ruud extended a strong record over Cam Norrie in the round of 16, the Norwegian has a poor one against Zverev that is also likely to extend in this quarter-final clash. Zverev leads their head-to-head record 2-0 from two meetings last season, both of which he took in straight sets in Masters quarter-finals in Cincinnati and Paris. Backing the German to repeat that feat seems a reasonable outcome here but taking him outright would be wise inside an accumulator.
