THE LOWDOWN

World number six Caroline Garcia came back from a set down to beat Daria Kasatkina in the most enthralling match of the WTA Finals so far to edge through to the semi-finals. The 29-year-old made her debut five years ago, also reaching the semi-finals stage before losing to Venus Williams in three sets, and only Iga Swiatek has beaten her this week in Fort Worth. Garcia claimed the third Masters title of her career at the Cincinnati Open back in August and then drove hard into the semi-finals of the US Open before defeat to Ons Jabeur.

World number five Maria Sakkari has come into the best form of her season at just the right time to look the outside favourite for the WTA Finals. The 27-year-old beat Ons Jabeur comfortably on Saturday to make it a spotless 3-0 record in the group stages but Iga Swiatek, facing Aryna Sabalenka in the other semi-final, remains the clear player to beat. Sakkari has still just one WTA title to her name but she has finished runner-up at two Masters events this season, to Swiatek in Miami and Jessica Pegula in Guadalajara two weeks ago.

THE PREDICTION

Maria Sakkari is playing some of the best tennis of her career, rather surprisingly after her fairly woeful summer, and confidence makes her a totally different prospect. However, Caroline Garcia’s experience at this stage of the WTA Finals, and her excellent record under this kind of pressure, suggests she can edge this encounter the longer the match takes. Garcia has beaten Sakkari in both of their previous meetings and on both occasions gone on to win two of her three Masters titles in Wuhan back in 2017 and Cincinnati this summer. Her performance against Kasatkina was an incredible statement but Sakkari’s bullish results this week suggest she could edge this on momentum alone. Garcia has won four of the five sets played between them, so back the Frenchwoman to earn at least one and leave the victor up to chance.
