THE PREDICTION

World number 50 Caroline Dolehide enjoyed a remarkable run to the final of the Guadalajara Masters last September, before losing to Maria Sakkari, but she looked set to dribble back down the WTA rankings until a string run at Indian Wells last time out. Whether it is Masters-level tennis or the desert conditions that suit the 25-year-old American best remains to be seen but she will be well-backed here in Miami with a solid opportunity to progress against qualifier Clara Tauson. World number 91 Tauson set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd in 2022 but injuries and other setbacks have seen her struggle to push on from her initial promise – with two WTA titles claimed the year before putting her in the same conversations as US Open finalists Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez. The Dane has all the weapons to burst back into form and reach the top of the sport one day but Dolehide’s victory over Victoria Azarenka at Indian Wells, and her tight exit to Yue Yuan, suggests she is the slight favourite on recent form. Back Dolehide to earn at least a set as the likelier winner of a tough first encounter.
