THE LOWDOWN

This is the match that entire Men’s Singles draw at Roland-Garros has been leading up to as world number one Carlos Alcaraz and number three Novak Djokovic face off for only the second time on tour. The winner of this year’s tournament is highly likely to be one of two-time former champion Djokovic, seeking a record 23rd Grand Slam title here, or 20-year-old Alcaraz, who claimed his first major at the US Open last summer. Alcaraz beat Rafael Nadal, the current defending champion, and Novak Djokovic back-to-back at the Madrid Masters last spring – becoming the only player to have done so on clay – and that three-set result over the Serb sees him lead their head-to-head 1-0 as things stand. The Spaniard has improved with each passing round in Paris, completely obliterating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first two sets of a straight win on Tuesday, and he has won three titles on clay already this season including defences of his titles in Barcelona and Madrid. Djokovic has also improved with every round but his level finally hit ‘peak powers’ territory on Tuesday when he came back from a set down to oust an impressive Karen Khachanov in four.

THE PREDICTION

This second encounter between the two is in many ways a first true one at this level, with neutral-ish ground in Paris as opposed to home advantage for Alcaraz in Spain and five sets leaving plenty of room for momentums to shift. The fact that Alcaraz came back from a set down to beat Djokovic last time out is perhaps the most interesting factor of their previous clash as Djokovic so often comes back himself from an early scare. Two out of three of their sets so far have seen tiebreaks, where Djokovic has been completely faultless this campaign, but he has not faced this new and even more improved version of the young, prodigious talent he met last season. Tennis fans everywhere hope for a five-set thriller but Alcaraz will be desperate to see fewer as experience makes Djokovic more dangerous with each passing set. This is very much an Alcaraz in three of Djokovic in five situation, so back Alcaraz to earn at least two sets and add at least a tiebreak in the match for good measure.
