THE LOWDOWN

CARLOS ALCARAZ

18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz dismissed Dusan Lajovic for three sets on Wednesday to maintain a perfect record into the third round of the Australian Open for a first time. The world number 31 will set a new career high of at least 30th no matter the outcome here but his stunning run to the quarter-finals of the US Open on his debut last season is an achievable target in Melbourne for the prodigious talent.

MATTEO BERRETTINI

World number seven Matteo Berrettini dropped a set to Stefan Kozlov on Wednesday to make it back-to-back four-set victories over American youngsters so far in Melbourne. The 25-year-old reached a first Grand Slam final last season in a four-set defeat to Novak Djokovic in a campaign that went similarly, with few straight-sets wins unlikely to bother him. The Italian won a first ATP 500 event last season at Queen’s Club.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating rematch between Carlos Alcaraz and Matteo Berrettini after the teenager won through in three-sets last year in their quarter-final clash at the Vienna Open. It is hard to tell, constructively, who the favourite actually is here with the Spaniard clearly ready to break the top 10 this season and world number seven Berrettini not quite up to his best level. There are almost certainly sets in this for both over five, and at least a tiebreak, so taking both players to win a set and a tiebreak in the match looks a great alternative to having to pick someone. Still, not to shy away from it, Alcaraz looks the likelier of two very capable winners.
