THE PREDICTION

World number one Carlos Alcaraz looks a genuine title contender at the Paris Masters now, behind reigning champion Novak Djokovic, after back-to-back straight-set victories proved his mini-blip is over. The 19-year-old took his rising star into supernova in September by winning a first Grand Slam title at the US Open, one of five ATP titles claimed this year including two Masters events in Miami and Madrid. This should be a thrilling watch against fellow youngster Holger Rune, also 19, as the Dane continues his own career-best form. The Dane broke the top 20 on tour this week after finishing runner-up to Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Swiss Indoors, his second final in as many weeks after claiming the second ATP title of his career in Stockholm. Rune is a dangerous player to face when in this mood, with Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz unable to touch him in his last two rounds.

Alcaraz beat Rune in straight sets at last season’s ATP Next Gen Finals but this could come much closer. Expect fluctuations from both players, with both still young enough to favour highlight-reel shots in some key moments, but Alcaraz should be able to edge this outright.
