THE LOWDOWN

CARLOS ALCARAZ

World number four Carlos Alcaraz overcame Jannik Sinner in five hours and fifteen minutes on Wednesday night to level their blossoming rivalry at two wins apiece. The 19-year-old can become world number one on Sunday if he wins the US Open or finishes runner-up to anybody but Casper Ruud but he is already set to become world number three for the first time no matter the outcome of this match. Alcaraz won two Masters titles this season in Miami and Madrid as well as two tour finals in Barcelona and Rio to take his career total up to five and he has set his highest Grand Slam run yet here in New York by reaching the last eight.

FRANCES TIAFOE

World number 26 Frances Tiafoe was insatiable in his quarter-final clash with Andrey Rublev, beating the Russian in straight sets almost exactly a year on form defeating him in the third round in five sets. The 24-year-old will break the top 20 for a first time after setting a new career-best Grand Slam run, besting his breakthrough campaign at the Australian Open back in 2019. Tiafoe’s story is a beautiful one and he is one match away from the chance to become the first native US Open Men’s Singles champion since Andy Roddick in 2006.

THE PREDICTION

Carlos Alcaraz was part of a match for the ages on Wednesday night as he and Sinner proved once again that tennis’ future is in capable hands. The Spaniard prodigy looked destined to reach world number one sooner rather than later but thanks to the warped current standings he could achieve that dream early by reaching the final, and immediately if Casper Ruud loses to Karen Khachanov in the other semi-final. Frances Tiafoe has been the overriding feelgood story this fortnight, though, after stunning Rafael Nadal in four sets in the 16, his only dropped set so far this tournament. The American’s self-belief will be matched by the welcome of Arthur Ashe stadium and that heady mix could help him to a set or two against Alcaraz, who has been in back-to-back five-set slogs this week.

Tiafoe was the winner of their only previous encounter, on clay, at the Barcelona Open last season but Alcaraz’ evolution from prodigy to worthy world number one has come in the space of 12 months. The teenager became the first player ever to beat Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal back-to-back on clay on his way to the Madrid Open title in May and beating Sinner, who has ousted him twice in July, is a significant statement. Sets should go both ways here but back Alcaraz to win outright.
