THE LOWDOWN

World number two Carlos Alcaraz took the first set from Alexander Zverev on Monday before running out of steam to fall in three on his ATP Finals debut. The 20-year-old has been far from his best since the start of the hardcourt swing, perhaps understandably after his heroic efforts in beating Novak Djokovic to the Wimbledon title in July, but he failed to make Turin this time last year due to injury and his lasting power seems to be of some concern as he dwindles at the end of a successive year. Alcaraz has the second-most wins on tour behind Daniil Medvedev, with a 64-11 record for 2023 including six ATP titles.

World number five Andrey Rublev was well beaten by his friend and compatriot Daniil Medvedev on Monday, a player whom he beat in three thrilling sets this time last year in Turin. 26-year-old Rublev beat Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas here last season before a surprisingly easy exit to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud in the semi-finals but the Russian returns after a better campaign in 2023 in which he claimed a maiden Masters title at the Monte-Carlo Open.

THE PREDICTION

This is the first ever encounter between Carlos Alcaraz and Andrey Rublev and the Russian may never have a better opportunity to beat the world number two. Alcaraz has looked underpowered and a little slower on tour since Wimbledon, and certainly since losing to Novak Djokovic at the Cincinnati Masters in August, but he will be desperate to make amends in this must-win match for both players. Rublev took Djokovic to three sets two weeks ago in Paris but his uber-consistent brand of backboard tennis seems to have a ceiling against the very top players. Back Alcaraz to have too many weapons to lose this match.
