THE LOWDOWN

World number one Carlos Alcaraz looked assured and as positive as ever in a straight-sets victory over Matteo Arnaldi, backing up another enjoyable four-set win over Dan Evans. The 20-year-old is defending a Grand Slam title for the first time after beating Casper Ruud in the final this time last season but he has since surpassed that achievement by stunning four-time defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in five thrilling sets in July. Alcaraz has more wins this season (57) than any other player and only Djokovic has fewer defeats with five to the Spaniard’s six.

Former world number two Alexander Zverev battled the elements, cramping and an equally befallen opponent in Jannik Sinner late on Monday night to eventually edge through victorious in five sets. The 26-year-old finished runner-up to Dominic Thiem here in 2020, from two sets up, and despite his recent excellent runs to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in back-to-back seasons it is still likeliest that he earns a maiden Grand Slam title on the hardcourts of New York or Melbourne.

THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Alexander Zverev stunned Jannik Sinner in five gruelling sets late on Arthur Ashe to spoil the hotly anticipated rematch between the Italian and Carlos Alcaraz after their quarter-final classic last year. What is more, the German has a serious chance of upsetting the defending champion here with all the tools required to shut Alcaraz out of the game if he can serve perfectly for three sets as he leads 3-2 in their head-to-head, with last summer’s quarter-final upset at Roland-Garros proof of what he can do at the peak of his powers. Alcaraz enjoyed a one-sided victory over the German at the Madrid Masters in May, backing up his victory over Zverev in the final there last season, but he has yet to beat the former finalist on a hardcourt. Zverev’s battle over Sinner in extreme conditions should see him worse off in fitness here to hand an extra edge to Alcaraz and the Spaniard will enjoy a partisan atmosphere too. Take Alcaraz to win outright but expect sets to go both ways.
