THE LOWDOWN
CARLOS ALCARAZ
19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of sixth no matter the outcome of this final after becoming the first player ever to beat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in back-to-back matches on clay. The Spaniard has played three tough, arduous three-setters in three days against Cam Norrie, Nadal and Djokovic but there was no signs of an ankle issue on Saturday after he turned it against Nadal in the quarter-finals. Alcaraz is through to his second Masters final of the season after winning his first at the Miami Open last month.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
Defending Madrid Open champion Alexander Zverev has grown with each match this campaign and a three-set victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas on Saturday was his best performance for some time. The 25-year-old enjoyed his best season on tour last year with two Masters titles won here and in Cincinnati, a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games, a second ATP Finals trophy and two further tour titles in Acapulco and Vienna – both in which he beat Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
THE PREDICTION
Carlos Alcaraz has arrived as the next elite player in Men’s tennis after becoming the first ever to beat Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal back-to-back on clay. The last player to properly earn that kind of praise was a teenage Alexander Zverev, who many thought would have won a Grand Slam before his 21st birthday after an incredible start to what is already an illustrious career at 25 years old. The German has improved round by round but he will meet the form player on tour in the final and he looks the underdog despite his 2-0 lead against Alcaraz in their head-to-head.
Alcaraz was given plenty more support in his match against three-time Madrid champion Djokovic than five-time champion Nadal but there was a real sense of shock in the former match against a Spanish icon. The Madrid crowd seemed to reward the teenager for getting through that baptism of fire with gusto in the semi-finals and he will be backed to the hilt by one of the best partisan atmospheres in tennis on Sunday. The conditions suit Zverev’s powerful game but Alcaraz has the wider variety of tools to drop, deflect and out-pace his opponent to another Masters title here. Take Alcaraz to win outright.
