THE LOWDOWN
Canada won the ATP Cup back in January built upon front-loading their singles matches with two top talents in Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov but only 22-year0old Auger-Aliassime can make the group stages of the Davis Cup here. The world number 13 has something to prove this week after performing poorly at the US Open after also exiting too early at the Canada Masters and Cincinnati Masters by his high standards. Auger-Aliassime won three of his five matches at the ATP Cup in the singles but he was also called into action in the doubles to win two of three matches alongside Shapovalov. Canada’s secret weapon could well be former world number 25 Vasek Pospisil, who has always given his all on the international stage. The 32-year-old won three out of four matches for Canada at the 2019 Davis Cup Finals to help drag his team to the semi-finals and his experience should fare pretty well against this week’s second options.
World number 74 Soonwoo Kwon brings a fairly underwhelming 15-20 record into the Davis Cup group stages but he has occasionally impressed this season, most notably in taking Denis Shapovalov to five sets at the Australian Open. The 24-year-old will have to lead South Korea masterfully this week as the only player on the team ranked inside the top 300 but he will be handy if required to play a Men’s Doubles decider as one of the faster players on tour. World number 384 Seong-Chan Hong is the likely second option this week although world number 542 JiSung Nam has the better experience with three tour-level wins under his belt.
THE PREDICTION
Whilst the lack of Denis Shapovalov weakens Canada significantly they should have more than enough in Felix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil to coast through this first group tie against South Korea. Auger-Aliassime needs to rebuild some confidence after a disappointing second round exit from the US Open, suggesting there is a slight chance at the upset for Soonwoo Kwon in their encounter, but the Canadian can win that clash at 80% on an indoor hardcourt. Back Canada to win 2-0 here.
