THE LOWDOWN

Canada upset host nation Spain with an incredible effort on Friday to likely see both nations go through to the Davis Cup Finals with a round to spare. Vasek Pospisil set the tone by taking the first from Roberto Bautista Agut before eventually falling in three to the Spaniard but the 32-year-old was crucial alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Men’s Doubles later as the pair edged out Spain’s duo in three tight sets. However, the result of the day was Auger-Aliassime’s coming back from a set down to beat world number one and US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz on enemy soil in Valencia. The 22-year-old is clearly capable of results like this, which makes his many stuttering defeats on tour this season even more frustrating, but the win could be a pivotal turning point ahead of the rets of his hardcourt season.

Serbia must beat Canada to reach the Davis Cup Finals later this year but with that looking pretty unlikely they can at least depart Valencia with their heads held high after winning the ‘best-of-the-rest’ tie in this group of death against South Korea. Both Dusan Lajovic and Miomir Kecmanovic won their singles matches over Seong-Chan Hong and Soonwoo Kwon, respectively, to close out the tie ahead of the doubles but they could really have done with the extra point there as Korea’s significantly lower-ranked duo won comfortably.

THE PREDICTION

This is one of only a few ties left in the final round of group fixtures with anything riding on it and Serbia will be desperately hoping that Felix Auger-Aliassime has another off day here. The Canadian’s clash with Miomir Kecmanovic looks to be the crucial fixture in this clash with Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil well capable of winning the doubles decider against Nikola Cacic and one of Dusan Lajovic or Filip Krajinovic. Pospisil is an excellent international player who should be able to edge past Lajovic in the opening fixture, although if Krajinovic plays Serbia should have the slight edge. Miomir Kecmanovic has beaten Felix Auger-Aliassime in both of their previous meetings, including at the Miami Open earlier this season, and losing to the Serb after claiming a first victory over a world number one is, unfortunately, the sort of thing that might happen for the 22-year-old here. Back Canada to win the tie outright here but it could actually be worth a small one-off on Serbia to provide a huge upset.
