THE PREDICTION
20-year-old Camila Osorio will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 35th after beating Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in straight sets on Saturday to reach her third tour final. The Colombian is definitely one to watch this season after impressing over much of last year, winning her first and only title to date at the Bogota Open on clay. Osorio beat Elina Svitolina at last season’s Tenerife Ladies Open on her way to the final there and she also beat the top seed Svitolina this week in the quarter-finals to provide a stern test here. World number 21 Leylah Fernandez is defending her solitary tour title at the Monterrey Open and she has improved with each round of this campaign after rediscovering her moxie. The Canadian famously reached the US Open final last September and finished runner-up to Emma Raducanu there but not before beating world-class player after world-class player in a searing display of what kind of future she may have.
Both young players look set to be very much a part of the top end of the sport for years to come but at this moment in time Fernandez has the support, largely garnered from her famous US Open campaign, and the fact that she is a popular defending champion. Camila Osorio should get her share of the love as a South American in Monterrey and it would not be a surprise to see her force a decider here. The most sensible move is taking Fernandez to win at least a set as the likelier champion but she has done enough this week to warrant backing outright.
