THE PREDICTION
17-year-old Joao Fonseca will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 225th after coming back from a set down to beat fellow youngster Alex Michelsen on his Masters debut. The Brazilian looks set to be a serious star on clay in the not-too distant future, reaching the quarter-finals of the Rio 500 on his tour debut in February, but this will be a significantly tougher test against 2023 Rio champion Cam Norrie.
World number 30 Norrie enjoyed a solid run to the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open last week, edged out in two tiebreaks by Tomas Martin Etcheverry, but he is usually a dependable all-court threat with the engine required to cope with the altitude in Madrid better than most. Fonseca enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals of the Bucharest Open last week but a three-set exit to Alejandro Tabilo suggests Norrie can avoid an upset. Back the Brit to earn at least a set as the likelier of the two to come through, although the former number eight should come through in two at his best.
TIP: CAMERON NORRIE TO WIN A SET
