THE LOWDOWN

CAMERON NORRIE

World number nine Cam Norrie is yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows to reach the round of 16 at the US Open for a first time, beating Benoit Paire, Joao Sousa and Holger Rune so far. The 27-year-old reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon back in July before a four-set defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic and he is more at home on US hardcourts as a former college star. Norrie won a first Masters title at Indian Wells around this time last season.

ANDREY RUBLEV

World number 11 Andrey Rublev overcame Denis Shapovalov in five sets in a well-contested five-setter on Saturday, his second five-set battle of the tournament after ousting Laslo Djere in the first round. The 24-year-old has twice reached the quarter-finals of the US Open, his best Grand Slam record so far, losing to Rafael Nadal in 2017 and to Daniil Medvedev in 2020. Rublev added three ATP titles this year, with his career total now standing at 11, after starting the season on fire but he has struggled over the summer.

THE PREDICTION

This could go to five between Cam Norrie, who values his engine above anything else, and Andrey Rublev, who will know his best chance at beating the in-form Brit is starting hard and fast to avoid another decider. The Russian is well capable of winning in here by any scoreline but Norrie’s chance of coming through will improve at four or five, as displayed in their two matches so far with Rublev winning in straight sets in 2020 and Norrie taking their semi-final at San Diego last season in three. Norrie has beaten the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Carlos Alcaraz in recent weeks and with his self-belief sky-high, in contrast to Rublev’s odd 2022 of doubts and tantrums, back the Brit to win outright.
