THE PREDICTION

World number 72 Brandon Nakashima has battled through two tough three-setters over Jason Kubler and Arthur Fils so far in Winston-Salem as he continues to struggle with consistency. The 22-year-old ended last season as the new Next Gen ATP Finals champion after claiming his maiden ATP title in San Diego this time last year but he has endured a tricky sophomore campaign so far in 2023, with an 11-16 record coming into this clash. World number 57 Richard Gasquet claimed the 16th ATP title of his long career at the Auckland Classic back in January but he has also struggled to match that early intensity pretty much ever since. A straight-sets victory over Marc-Andrea Huesler on Tuesday suggests he is the more dependable performer here but Nakashima beat the Frenchman comfortably late last season to look the slight favourite in these conditions, particularly as the home favourite. Back Nakashima to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance, although taking the American to win in three is tempting.
