THE LOWDOWN
World number 49 Brandon Nakashima battled through a surprisingly tough opener with home hopeful Matteo Arnaldi on Tuesday, needing five sets to beat the world number 134. 21-year-old Nakashima should be the better for a gritty opening win and he is one of just two players in Milan with an ATP title to his name having won his maiden trophy on home soil at the San Diego Open in August.
World number 74 Jiri Lehecka started 2022 off in fine form but his tennis tailed off over the summer on clay and grass. Back on his favoured hardcourts in recent weeks, the Czech recently beat Grigor Dimitrov at the Stockholm Open and he grabbed a convincing Next Gen debut victory over Francesco Passaro on Tuesday.
THE PREDICTION
A win apiece for Brandon Nakashima and Jiri Lehecka makes this essentially a straight-up shoot-out for a place in the semi-finals and, surprisingly, the Czech made the more convincing start in Milan. However, Nakashima’s gritty five-set victory is likely to help him improve ahead of this first meeting with Lehecka and he has enjoyed the much more consistent season, with three times as many wins on tour than the Czech. Sets could go both ways here but Nakashima should be the man to come through the outright winner.
