THE LOWDOWN
BRANDON NAKASHIMA
World number 80 Brandon Nakashima played well to oust in-form Adrian Mannarino in straight sets on Friday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for successive seasons. The 20-year-old found some huge form last summer on the North American hardcourt swing, with back-to-back finals reached at the Los Cabos Open and Atlanta Open where he lost Cam Norrie and John Isner, respectively.
FRANCES TIAFOE
24-year-old Frances Tiafoe set a career-high ATP world ranking of 29th back in 2019 after a stellar run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and he is just one place behind that ranking now after some excellent form late last season. Tiafoe finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Vienna Open having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas, Diego Schwartzman and Jannik Sinner en-route and he also beat Andrey Rublev in five sets to reach the round of 16 at the US Open.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tough call between young Brandon Nakashima coming off a great result on Friday and Frances Tiafoe coming in very cold in his first match since losing to Taylor Fritz at the Australian Open. The 24-year-old is a big-time kind of player who would be more likely to shock the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas in his first match in almost two months than overcome a spirited display from a player on the up but below him in the rankings like Nakashima. For that reason, take Nakashima to win at least a set here with the better momentum. Tiafoe won their previous meeting in three sets at last season’s Miami Open.
