THE PREDICTION

San Diego native Brandon Nakashima overcame in-form Daniel Elahi Galan in three sets on Friday to continue a promising trajectory towards the final. The 21-year-old has already reached two ATP tour finals at 250 level, finishing runner-up to Cam Norrie at the Los Cabos Open and John Isner at the Atlanta Open last season back-to-back. World number 130 Christopher O’Connell provided the shock of the tournament, though, when he stunned second-seed Jenson Brooksby in three sets on Friday to reach the first semi-final of his long career. The 28-year-old will break his career-high ATP world ranking of 97th by reaching the final but Nakashima can learn from his compatriot Brooksby’s mistakes here and feed off the home support to edge through this first meeting the outright winner.
