THE PREDICTION
World number five Rafael Nadal beat Corentin Moutet in straight sets on Wednesday night to maintain a perfect start to his 18th French Open campaign. The 35-year-old has a plethora of incredible stats at Roland-Garros as 13-time champion, which is surely one of the most immovable records in all sport, but perhaps his most incredible is just three losses in 17 campaigns. With two of those coming against Novak Djokovic, including last season’s semi-final, the Spaniard looks set to cruise through to the second week at least before meeting the Serb and new pretender Carlos Alcaraz. This will be a stern test, though, with world number 29 Botic van de Zandschulp in the form of his life. The Dutchman beat Fabio Fognini in three on Wednesday and he is a tireless competitor over five sets, with last year’s run to the quarter-finals of the US Open especially impressive as he ended up the only player able to take a set form eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.
Backing Nadal to win outright is not as over-cautious as it sound here but the Spaniard should be able to outclass Van de Zandschulp eventually.
