THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Botic van de Zandschulp reached the quarter-finals of the US Open two years ago, taking the only set form Daniil Medvedev’s title-winning campaign before defeat in four. The Dutchman set a career-high ATP world ranking of 22nd this time last season but he has struggled to match that intensity this year, with a second-successive defeat to Holger Rune at the Munich Open in April seemingly knocking the confidence out of him. Now at world number 65, Van de Zandschulp faces a tough test in a resurgent Jordan Thompson in what looks a strong candidate for five sets on Tuesday with both players no stranger to a marathon match. World number 51 Thompson enjoyed an excellent grass swing this summer, finishing runner-up to Tallon Griekspoor at ‘s-Hertogenbosch and impressing in defeat to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon before a recent run to the quarter-finals on the hardcourts of Washington. Each of both players’ last four first round matches at Grand Slams have seen at least four sets so consider a one off on this to see five or take both players to win at least a set.
