THE LOWDOWN
BOTIC VAN DE ZANDSCHULP
26-year-old Botic van de Zandschulp can break the top 30 for a first time next week after ousting an out-of-sorts Sebastian Korda in straight sets on Monday. The Dutchman burst onto the scene this time last season with two five-set thrillers at Roland-Garros, beating Hubert Hurkacz before losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and he has steadily improved ever since with a run to the quarter-finals of the US Open particularly impressive. Van de Zandschulp reached a first ATP final last month at the Munich Open before having to retire against Holger Rune through injury.
CASPER RUUD
World number 10 Casper Ruud has struggled on his favoured surface so far this clay swing, with a 4-4 record since finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Open last month. The 23-year-old remains one of the best on tour on clay, on which he won his sixth ATP title at the Buenos Aires Open back in February for a career total of seven titles.
THE PREDICTION
Botic van de Zandschulp continues to exceed expectations on court and he leads this head-to-head 2-0 after twice shocking top 10 player Casper Ruud at the US Open last season and in the quarter-finals of last month’s Munich Open. Backing the Dutchman to win at least a set looks the sensible call here against the Norwegian, with Ruud perhaps still suffering from losing his first Masters final at the Miami Open.
