THE PREDICTION
World number 29 Borna Coric conceded just four games to Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Thursday in his most convincing performance this week as the top seed at Winston-Salem. The 26-year-old failed to defend his Cincinnati Open title last week, losing to Hubert Hurkacz in three sets, but he did recently lift the Hopman Cup for Croatia alongside Donna Vekic to improve his overall season. World number 42 is riding an eight-match winning streak into the semi-finals after a vastly impressive 6-3 6-0 victory over in-form Laslo Djere. The 22-year-old won his third ATP title at the Kitzbuhel Open earlier this month, beating home favourite Dominic Thiem confidently, to further prove himself a top 20 player of the future. This is a really interesting moment to meet for the first time as Coric’s best tennis is still a little out of reach but the conditions, and overall ability, favour the Croat. Baez’s sheer doggedness at this stage of a tournament has to be taken into account, though, and backing the Argentine to earn at least a set feels like the most sensible way to avoid a full result here.
