THE PREDICTION

World number five Alexander Zverev should be considered a dark horse for the Madrid Open title this fortnight, with two of his five career Masters titles coming here in 2018 and 2021. The 27-year-old will be especially targeting form on the clay swing this season as perhaps his best chance at winning a Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros, having come close to beating Rafael Nadal there in 2022 before a season-ending injury, as well as the surface on which he will defend his Olympic Gold Medal in Paris later this summer.

This could be a very difficult start for the German against former number 12 Borna Coric, who reached the semi-finals here last season before defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, but the Croat will have to significantly improve after edging past qualifier Benjamin Hassan. The pair share a storied 3-3 head-to-head record but Zverev has won each of their last two encounters, with Coric’s last victory coming en-route to his Halle Open title in 2018. Back Zverev to win outright, with four of their six matches seeing sets go both ways.

TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN
