THE PREDICTION

There are some interesting similarities between former world number four Bianca Andreescu and former world number 10 Emma Raducanu ahead that make this match-up altogether more compelling. 22-year-old Andreescu won the US Open as a teenager back in 2019 after bursting onto the scene at Indian Wells that season but she missed practically all of 2020 through injury and pandemic complications and she has struggled to stay fit on tour long enough to break back inside the top 20 since. 20-year-old Raducanu became the first qualifier to win the US Open in the Open Era in 2021 but she has struggled similarly with injury concerns since. The Brit produced an excellent run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells last week before defeat to world number one Iga Swiatek showed how much work there is left to do but a three-set upset over Beatriz Haddad-Maia was hugely encouraging. Andreescu gave Swiatek more of a match before also losing in two at Indian Wells and the Canadian won their only previous encounter, albeit via an injury to Raducanu at the Rome Masters last summer.

It would be a small miracle to see a match between these two completed without an injury scare and so it is best to leave this one out of an accumulator. Otherwise back Raducanu to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners after her efforts in the desert last time out.
