THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Ugo Humbert is a player nearing crisis now at world number 143 after starting the season with a victory over Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Cup. The former world number 25 won the Halle Open last season but contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open back in January looks to have derailed much of that good work. A 7-17 record coming into the US Open is concerning but the Frenchman has reached three-successive semi-finals at Challengers over the last few weeks, losing to French opposition on each occasion. World number 50 Benjamin Bonzi could well be the fourth in a row in this first ever meeting at tour level with the 26-year-old enjoying his best season on tour. Bonzi has won two of three opening rounds at Grand Slams this season but Humbert did make the third at Wimbledon last month for an encouraging sign. This is a tough call in terms of the ceilings of both players but back Bonzi to win at least two sets as the just-about likelier victor.
