THE LOWDOWN
BEN SHELTON
20-year-old rising star Ben Shelton broke the top 100 on tour before even leaving the USA but he has been incredible in his first month abroad. The American will set a career-high of around 65th no matter the outcome here after an immeasurably mature straight-sets performance over Aussie favourite Alexei Popyrin on Saturday, with the John Cain Arena crowd his toughest foe yet. Shelton ended 2022 with three-successive finals on the Challenger circuit on home soil, winning one of them.
J.J. WOLF
24-year-old J.J. Wolf will break the top 50 on tour for the first time after an incredible first foray into the second week of a Grand Slam here in Melbourne. Wolf beat Michael Mmoh in comfortable straight sets on Saturday to back a mini upset over an out-of-sorts Diego Schwartzman in the second round. The American reached a maiden ATP title at the Firenze Open late last season before finishing runner-up to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
THE PREDICTION
Both Ben Shelton and J.J. Wolf have reached the second week of the Australian Open on their main draw debuts but 20-year-old Shelton’s feat is made all that more remarkable considering he had never left the USA until this month. Shelton’s future looks very bright indeed as a tall left-hander with some impressive pace and his victory over Popyrin in the third round is the most eye-catching of their respective results. The first set will be key here between players with very little baggage and a first meeting between the two should see sets go both ways. Back Shelton to earn at least two as the just-about likelier of two very capable winners.
