BEN SHELTON VS FRANCES TIAFOE PREDICTION
In what is a replay of their quarter-final clash at last year’s US Open, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe will meet once again in this year’s third round.
Shelton was the victor last year 6-2 3-6 7-6 6-2 and he followed that up in a final in Houston earlier this year winning that their only other previous meeting 7-5 4-6 6-3.
That will unquestionably give Shelton confidence coming into this clash but Tiafoe should not be underestimated. Tiafoe has played well in his victories over Aleksandar Kovacevic and Alexander Shevchenko and he was in great form in Cincinnati losing in the final to Jannik Sinner.
This of course will be an almighty challenge and one which is sure to divide home support. Shelton’s pumped up style will no doubt capture the New York locals but Tiafoe will be well received also.
Shelton has looked extremely strong in his two matches against Dominic Thiem and Roberto Bautista Agut; beating both in straight sets. This will be a much harder test however. Even though Tiafoe has lost both previous meetings, they have been close and he has won a set in each. Expect both players to win a set, making over 3.5 sets very appealing, and we just have to side with Shelton once again here.
