BEN SHELTON VS ARTHUR FILS PREDICTION
Ben Shelton had to show some grit and determination in the quarter-finals as he came through a tough test against Andrey Rublev in three sets. He took the first set 7-5 but Rublev hit back to win a second set tiebreak. Shelton halted Rublev’s momentum and took the third 6-4 to show a really steely side to him which perfectly complements the talent he has.
Many of the stats in that match were in Rublev’s favour but Shelton came up with the points at key moments in the match and that proved decisive. Otherwise Rublev had more break points (6-2), won more receiving points (31-17), had a better first serve percentage (78%-72%) and won more on first serve (88%-73%). So many of the key stats were in Rublev’s favour including overall points won (101-97) yet still Shelton produced when it mattered most.
He now meets Arthus Fils who is playing some really good tennis himself right now and he has yet to drop a set in Basel. The Frenchman got past Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday in straight sets 7-6 6-3 and impressively did not concede a single break point.
He is playing with really good confidence right now and that will only be heightened by the fact that he beat Shelton in the quarter-final of the Japan Open in Tokyo just a few weeks ago. Fils went on to with that tournament and he just has that edge in his game and personality that is helping him win in crucial moments too.
We have a marginal preference for Fils but we can completely understand why the betting has both players completely even. The Frenchman has real momentum and we just like his consistency. Shelton came through the Rublev match impressively when he was not the better player, but he will not have that luxury against Fils who will punish him.
