24-year-old Paula Badosa set a new career-high WTA ranking of third after two deep runs at Indian Wells and the Miami Open. The Spaniard came back from a set down and a tight second-set tiebreak to oust an impressive Claire Liu on Thursday and she will be the better for it here in a difficult test with world number 21 Belinda Bencic. 25-year-old Bencic has been struggling for form for several months before a resurgent campaign at last week’s Miami Open where she reached the semi-finals before defeat to eventual runner-up Naomi Osaka. Bencic was impressive in a straight-sets defeat of Madison Keys on Thursday but she has lost all three meetings with Badosa including at this very tournament last season in three sets. Backing the Spaniard to win through outright on a surface that favours her looks reasonable here.
