THE LOWDOWN
Belgium finished runner-up to Great Britain at the Davis Cup Finals in 2015 after David Goffin just lost out to Andy Murray in an epic on clay. Former world number seven Goffin is a wonderfully experienced player to take into the Davis Cup Group stages, with some of his best results coming whilst representing his country in recent years. The 31-year-old took Rafael Nadal to a three-set classic at the Madrid Open earlier this year on clay and he very nearly reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in July before losing in five sets to Cam Norrie. World number 134 Zizou Bergs is a young player with plenty of promise and the 23-year-old won the deciding match in the previous round over Finland to see Belgium through. Bergs won the Ilkley Challenger on grass this summer, defeating Jack Sock in the final.
Australia last won the Davis Cup Finals in 2003 but they are the second-most successful nation at this tournament with 28 titles, four behind the US. World number 22 Alex de Minaur is the backbone of a patriotic Aussie team who often thrives whilst playing for his country, most notably taking a career-best ranking win over Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cup earlier this year. The 23-year-old won the sixth ATP title of his career at the Atlanta Open back in July and he came close to reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon before a gut-wrenching five-set defeat to Cristian Garin. World number 81 Thanasi Kokkinakis claimed his maiden ATP title on home soil in Adelaide back in January before a stunning Men’s Doubles title-winning campaign at the Australian Open alongside Nick Kyrgios.
THE PREDICTION
Doubles could well be the deciding factor of this tie if David Goffin brings his best level to Hamburg but Alex de Minaur leads their head-to-head 3-0, including their first meeting at the 2019 Davis Cup, and the Belgian has been in below par form again recently. With De Minaur likely to win the first option battle, Thanasi Kokkinakis has an excellent opportunity to take the tie to 2-0 against Zizou Bergs, who has impressed this season on grass but a clay court does favour the big-serving Aussie. Australia are also blessed with a myriad of Men’s Doubles options, with Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell well capable of seeing the tie through. Back Australian to win, probably 2-0.
