THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Beatriz Haddad-Maia just missed out on a bye to the second round as the ninth seed here in Guadalajara but she could be one of many players who stand to benefit from a sever lack of top 10 players in the mix. Former number seven Danielle Collins is another, though, after recently bursting back into form and she is wily enough to know that she may never have a better opportunity to win a Masters title. Collins reached the semi-finals of the San Diego Open last week before defeat to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in three sets and it took Iga Swiatek to oust her from last month’s Masters events in Montreal and Cincinnati. With both of those absent in Guadalajara, and Haddad-Maia’s recent results showing a little vulnerability against the more aggressive players, back Collins to edge through this first encounter on grit alone or take the match to see three sets with both players no stranger to a slog.
