THE LOWDOWN

BARBORA KREJCIKOVA

World number four Barbora Krejcikova was already a seasoned doubles champion alongside her fellow Czech Katerina Siniakova for a number of years but last season saw a stupendous breakthrough on the singles tour. Krejcikova won the Strasbourg Open on clay in late May that transferred into an incredible winning streak to claim the Roland-Garros title via defeats of Coco Gauff, Elina Svitolina, Maria Sakkari and finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The 26-year-old also won the doubles tournament in Paris and while her singles form has curtailed a little off the clay she should be considered a threat in the singles and the favourite in the doubles alongside Siniakova.

ANDREA PETKOVIC

34-year-old Andrea Petkovic was in impressive form at the Melbourne 1 tournament last week with wins over fifth seed Liudmila Samsonova and Clara Burel but she was unfortunate enough to meet Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals. The world number 72 won her first WTA title since 2015 last year at the Cluj-Napoca Open to make it seven in total in what has been an excellent career. ‘Petko’ made the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in 2014 for a best showing at a major but she also reached the quarter-finals both here and at the US Open back in 2011.

THE PREDICTION

World number four was just edged out in a thrilling Sydney Tennis Classic final tiebreak by champion Paula Badosa in the third set but the Czech can take plenty of positives into the Australian Open. The current Roland-Garros champion’s storming comeback win over Anett Kontaveit on Friday felt like something of a corner turned after some sub-par performances in the singles late last season and she should be able to overcome Andrea Petkovic here in what should be an exciting tussle. Krejcikova was the winner of their only previous meeting in the second round of Wimbledon last year in straight sets but the outright pick for the 25-year-old is wise with Petkovic in good form.
