- Stefanos Tsitsipas defended 11 break point opportunities against world number three Roger Federer in a battling performance that brought him up to a 50% win percentage over the Swiss in the semis to reach the final.
- The Greek star has won three of four matches played at the ATP Finals to qualify for the grand final here but this will be the last match of his season as Greece have not made the Davis Cup Finals.
- The 21-year-old lost his only previous final with Thiem at the Beijing Open last month after going one set up, which is similar to how he lost his only match here to Rafael Nadal so he will aim to start fast.
DOMINIC THIEM
- Dominic Thiem got back to his best against Alexander Zverev and beat the reigning ATP Finals champion in straight sets to reach the final here for the first time.
- Recent victories over Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic here put Thiem in good stead but recent losses to Mattteo Berrettini here and Grigor Dimitrov in Paris two weeks ago show that there are two quite different versions of this unpredictable player.
- Thiem holds a 4-2 head-to-head record over his good friend and former hitting partner Tsitsipas, with all six matches played within the last two years, and half of them ending in straight sets.
THE PREDICTION
World number five faces world number six here in a rematch of the Beijing Open final played over a month ago now, where Dominic Thiem came back from one set down to win. This would seem the most likely method of victory here between two of the more unpredictable players on tour and the logic of this tournament dictates that whomever takes the first set could well end up losing this final. Both have beaten Roger Federer this week, while Thiem has defeated Djokovic also, and if he can play like that again he can take this match from the Greek’s hands. What looks most certain in a match of uncertainties is that this should go to a decider, and will be a season-ending epic for both players with Austria and Greece not featuring in next week’s Davis Cup.
