STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
- Stefanos Tsitispas beat Daniil Medvedev for the first time in his career after five straight losses and was visibly overjoyed in breaking that streak against a player he has claimed that he finds more difficult than the top three.
- The world number six was almost unstoppable on a successful first serve against Medvedev, winning 89% of points that landed and making five aces with no double faults in the process, made all the more impressive by the quality of his opponent’s defence.
- The 21-year-old holds a healthy 3-1 head-to-head record over Alexander Zverev, 2-1 on hard courts, and has beaten him in both of their contests this year at the Madrid Masters and more recently in Beijing.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
- Alexander Zverev put in an assured performance becoming of the defending ATP Finals champion when he beat an out-of-sorts Rafael Nadal in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).
- The German number one and world number seven also won his first match at the ATP Finals in his title-winning campaign last year but lost his second round robin match to then world number one Novak Djokovic, before beating the Serb in the final.
- The 22-year-old beat Tsitsipas in their first meeting at the Citi Open last year but has since been unable to work out the Greek, and he will need to reset his mentality after the excitement of beating Nadal for the first time.
THE PREDICTION
This is possibly the most difficult match-up to call at the ATP Finals between defending champion Alexander Zverev and the man who looks the most eager to be here in Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek’s celebration after defeating Daniil Medvedev in his first game gave the sense of a player who knew he had performed at his best and he will have targeted this match as his most winnable when the draw was announced. Tsitsipas has won the last three matches played against Zverev, most recently in straight sets at the Beijing Open, and he can take advantage of the German’s tendency to lose focus after a marquee win to go 2-0 in the group.
