THE LOWDOWN

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Despite winning the Paris Masters title for a fifth time last week, Novak Djokovic finds himself chasing the year-end world number one spot after Rafael Nadal usurped his throne by 640 ATP points.
  • The battle for world number one will be as much a part of this ATP Finals as the actual tournament and with new leader Rafael Nadal in the other side of the draw, it should make for some fascinating games as everyone else tries to beat the two of them.
  • The Serb did not drop a set until the final of last season’s ATP Finals where he lost in straight sets to Alexander Zverev but he has won the title here a staggering five times.

MATTEO BERRETTINI

  • Matteo Berrettini can cap off an excellent breakthrough season on tour with a debut appearance at the ATP Finals after qualifying by the skin of his teeth when Gael Monfils lost to Denis Shapovalov at the Paris Masters last week.
  • 23-year-old Berrettini has become the fourth Italian to break into the top 10 of the ATP world rankings after a 2019 to remember, with the highlight a run to the semi-finals of the US Open and two titles in Stuttgart and Budapest in June and April respectively.
  • Including his semi-final loss to Rafael Nadal at the US Open in September, Berrettini has reached the last four in three of his last six tournaments and is a dangerous, rather unpredictable opponent.

THE PREDICTION

What a stage to play your first career meeting with Novak Djokovic this is for Matteo Berrettini. The Italian has impressed many this year with his powerful playstyle and there are few holes in his game already at just 23, with some work needed on his consistency in the off-season. His debut at the ATP Finals should be an excellent game, and with the pressure off he can do his best to showcase what he is capable of. He has every right to take a set from Novak Djokovic, but he probably won’t, because the now world number two has glory in his sights. Djokovic had been number one for over a year and is desperate to enter the next decade as the top dog. He can take this match in two hard-fought sets.
