DAVID GOFFIN
- David Goffin made light work of his first ATP Cup opponent Radu Albot to help Belgium claim a convincing 3-0 win in their first tie.
- The world number 11 is a seasoned, experienced international player and has represented Belgium’s hopes almost single-handedly for many years, including at last November’s Davis Cup where he won one of his two rubbers.
- Goffin has never faced Dan Evans head-on before but the two players were part of the 2015 Davis Cup finals in which Goffin lost to Great Britain’s Andy Murray, and then in the deciding doubles to Murray and his brother Jamie. It is unclear if Goffin will play in a deciding doubles here, if needed.
DANIEL EVANS
- In what has been a well-trodden path for Dan Evans over the last few months, the British number one took the first set against Grigor Dimitrov before his opponent rallied to come through a tight game in three.
- Evans also took the first set and then lost the match in two of his four singles matches at the Davis Cup in November, to Robin Haase and Alexander Bublik, though to his credit he beat Jan-Lennard Struff in three in the quarter-finals.
- The world number 42 looks to have continued his peak form into the new decade after what was arguably his best year on tour and he can be a very difficult opponent for even the best players.
THE PREDICTION
While these two players have never faced each other before there is plenty of recent international tennis history between Belgium and Great Britain, after the latter won the 2015 Davis Cup finals in Belgium. Dan Evans was part of the team that day, though he did not play, and will see this as another big chance to prove himself on the world stage after falling just short against Grigor Dimitrov last time out. David Goffin is by far the better player, of course, and should come through this tie the winner, but there was something in Evans’ performance against Dimitrov that could see a big shock here.
