ATP and WTA Tennis rankings: Who’s worth watching for the year ahead?
Between Wimbledon, the Canadian Open, and of course the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, there has already been plenty for tennis fans to take in this year. In fact, we’ve seen some upsets along the way, and while the ATP and WTA rankings don’t seem to have altered too much in recent times, there might be a few trends worth looking into.
Naturally, names such as Sinner, Djokovic, Świątek and Alcaraz are all likely to keep scaling the ranking heights in the year ahead — but what about rising stars, or those who have made slight lurches forward recently? Let’s look at four world tennis stars who could be climbing even higher on the world ranking ladders by the end of 2025.
Hubert Hurkacz
Hurkacz is a dark horse in the ATP rankings who, despite having claimed eight singles titles in his career so far, only seems to be getting started.
A quick look at his recent surge up the rankings is just a taste of what’s to come. The Polish ace is currently ranked seventh in the world at the time of writing, and thanks to having claimed a title in the past year along with a record of 38-16, he’s unlikely to be dropping down any time soon.
In fact, we think Hurkacz is a name that’s going to climb further up the ATP rankings in 2025. Keep a close eye on him and if you’re keen to follow his matches via a sportsbook, make sure to sign up via Oddschecker and take advantage of one of their exclusive promo codes to bet on Hurkacz, plus any other Tennis.
Victoria Azarenka
Azarenka has been ranked number one before, can she get close again? The Belarusian star continues to set an impressive win/loss record, and despite currently ranking 20th among an emerging generation of talent, she’s still one to watch.
In fact, Azarenka has climbed the rankings slightly over the past year despite not winning any titles in the past 12 months. Could she add another one or two to her magic 21?
With fellow stars such as Andy Murray, who appeared at Wimbledon and the Olympic Games for the last time this year, retiring — it’s intriguing to see Azarenka continuing to impress in world tournaments. We think this next year could be an eye-opening one for her fans.
Danielle Collins
Since 2011, Collins has steadily ascended the WTA table to the point where she achieved her all-time top ranking in 2022, scaling seventh place. At the time of writing, she’s 11th in the world and has claimed two singles titles in 2024 so far. That’s half the number of titles she’s won overall.
Collins also commands an impressive record of 39 wins to 13 losses in 2024 so far. To us, this all adds up to the Florida ace being another player to watch as 2025 approaches. Despite losing to the mighty Iga Świątek in the Olympic quarter finals, Collins is likely to climb higher than seventh place based on pure determination alone.
Tommy Paul
Tommy Paul is a name that many hardcore tennis fans are probably familiar with, but we think there’s a chance his star could go stratospheric in the year to come.
Having won two titles this year so far and having already moved slightly up the rankings, Paul is statistically in the prime of his international tennis career. He’s currently ranked 14th on the ATP Tour, just two places below his all-time best rank of 12th, that was first set back in October 2023.
Add that to a superb record of 35 wins to 14 losses this year alone, and you have a major star who has yet to show us his best.
